Nominations were made for those individuals who had achieved excellence in the maternity services above and beyond the normal midwifery role and Lesley Price, Supervisor of Midwifes at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust was chosen as one of the hundred.  Lesley was nominated with a special reference to her being a facilitator in introducing two home birth groups in Wigan and Leigh.

Lesley says: “I had a wonderful evening with the Prime Minister and Mrs Blair. I chatted with Cherie especially about her normal birth with baby Leo after previous caesarean sections and the pressures she ‘d had to have a repeat caesarean. I reassured her that at Wigan she would have had all her choices respected and supported as we are already implementing the Government’s “Maternity Matters” guidance.  It was a memorable occasion because as well as meeting the Prime Minister and his wife I also had the opportunity to meet Neil Turner MP for Wigan who escorted me to high tea at the Houses of Parliament and then gave me a personal guided of the House of Commons”.

The Women led Home Birth Groups are held once a month at both Wigan and Leigh for further information contact Wendy Blackwood 01942 205935 (Wigan) or Jude Robinson 01942 671128 (Leigh).
