New Theatre opens at Wrightington Hospital

Newsdate: 1st November 2007

The North West is set to benefit from Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust’s £1.4 million investment in a new state of the art operating theatre at Wrightington Hospital.   This increases the number of theatres at Wrightington from seven to eight allowing us to increase our theatre capacity and meet the demand for joint replacements in a completely MRSA infection free environment. The operating theatre opens its doors to patients on Monday the 5th November 2007.

Angela Kelly, Acting General Manager, Musculoskeletal Division says: “This investment will help the hospital continue to improve services and create extra capacity for surgery.   This will also ensure that we meet the Government’s 18-week target for orthopaedic patients being seen from referral to treatment. This is vital to ensure that Wrightington Hospital remains the first choice for patients both locally and nationally choosing orthopaedic treatment.

Achievements at Wrightington Hospital over the past year have been zero MRSA infections, the new patient information centre opened its doors and has been a great success with patients and we have reduced by 10% the average length of stay for the most common procedures. We also saw the introduction of the One stop Shop in February 2007 ensuring patients have shorter lengths of stay for hip and knee operations.

Angela continues: “Dedicated staff at the hospital have worked tremendously hard over the previous year to ensure all our patients receive a fantastic service”.

Chief Executive Andrew Foster commented: “This is fantastic news for Wrightington. We already have an international reputation for orthopaedic surgery but it is imperative that we invest in and continue to improve services at Wrightington so that we have the capacity to meet the 18-week target in order to remain the number one choice for patients. Staff have worked extremely hard to ensure that we are on track to meet the target that by December 2008, so that no patient will wait more than 18 weeks between GP referral and hospital treatment.

Andrew continues: “Looking to the future at Wrightington we have plans in place to ensure that we offer the best orthopaedic service nationally.  Our high volume of specialist procedures and long-standing research means that we can predict the best clinical outcomes, the lowest revision rates, the highest levels of pain-free patients and the highest levels of significantly improved mobility. In addition to this we have zero levels of MRSA and expert teams of staff with unrivalled experience in their specialist work. This major investment will allow us to continue to design our future services to make the patient experience as efficient and as pleasant as possible.”
