Trusts announce major development in health services at Leigh

Newsdate: 1st October 2007

Patients in Leigh and the wider Wigan Borough are set to benefit from two fantastic new developments of health services planned on the Leigh Infirmary site.

Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust and Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust have joined forces in an innovative partnership to completely transform healthcare facilities on the Leigh site.  This is part of a wider, overall commitment between the two organisations to completely renew Leigh Infirmary, the first phase being a LIFT development to provide 21st century facilities for GPs in the heart of the community and the second a new community hospital development.

The development of these new facilities has been made possible through the agreement of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust to make land available on the Leigh Infirmary site and are the first two phases of the modernisation of the site. The two organisations are jointly submitting a bid for funding to the Department of Health in October to support the second phase of this exciting new project.

Discussions with local people, GP practices and staff will start immediately to help shape the new LIFT facility, which will include GP services, a wide range of community services and a new NHS Walk-in centre as well as continuing to further develop hospital services on the site.

Commenting jointly on the announcement, PCT Chairman, Alan Stephenson and Les Higgins, Acting Chairman of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust said, "We are absolutely delighted to announce that the plans to develop these much needed modern facilities are to be brought to the PCT Board in December 2007. Anyone who has used the LIFT buildings in other parts of the Borough will know just how good they are and the wide range of services that can be offered to local people from these buildings.

“Of course the Board will need to ensure that the business case represents good value for money and meets the needs of local people before final approval is given, but we are confident that we will see work commence during 2008.

“We are also delighted to be working in partnership in further improving healthcare services for all our patients, not just at Leigh, but also across the whole of the Wigan Borough. Improving GP services and fantastic and innovative community hospital developments are two very important steps in moving forward an overall commitment from our organisations.

“This joint venture is not just about rebuilding the bricks and mortar of the Leigh Infirmary site but will provide our patients and staff with a redesigned multi-agency development of seamless care at every stage from home to hospital.  In conjunction with our other partners our eventual vision for the future is of a health campus, which in addition to healthcare services, will provide sport, leisure and education facilities.”
