WWL Recognising Excellence Award Winners

The JJB Stadium played host on Friday 24th April 2009 to a rather special night of celebration and entertainment culminating in an award ceremony for staff at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL).  The Recognising Excellence Awards sponsored by the WRVS and hosted by WWL was a ceremony of achievement in recognition of staff’s hard work, commitment and dedication in ensuring all our patients receive the best care every day.

Staff from all areas across the Trust submitted entries to a number of categories demonstrating innovation and improvement to services for patients and the winners were presented with glass trophies in recognition of their achievement.

As well as our own stars, our staff, the event was attended by three other “star” lookalikes, “The Queen”, “Marilyn Monroe” and guests were serenaded by “Frank Sinatra”.

Trust staff receiving their Recognising Excellence Award Staff from the Pre operative One Stop Shop Service at Ward E at Wrightington were the winners in the What Matters to Patients and the Public Award and were delighted to receive the overall Foundation Trust Award.

The Pre operative One Stop Shop Service has revolutionised the orthopaedic patient experience and journey at Wrightington.
The One Stop Shop means a more effective and efficient visit to hospital for patients to prepare for and receive treatment. Patients will come to Outpatients to see their Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon as usual. If the doctor decides day case surgery is appropriate, the patient will see a nurse to check they are fit and ready for surgery; an anaesthetist may also be consulted at this point if needed. Everything that needs to be done will be done in just one hospital visit.

At the end of the One Stop Shop visit patients will be able to arrange a date for their operation and will know exactly what is happening about their treatment when they go home.

Carl Culshaw, Ward Manager for the Service says: “Many of our patients are elderly and find trips to hospital quite exhausting. Others have work and childcare commitments that make additional hospital appointments difficult. The Pre operative One Stop Shop has been tailored to suit our patients and will save time and energy for everyone. We have found that patients like the certainty of being given an operation date there and then rather than being added to a waiting list.  This is also a unique way of using the hospital’s valuable resources more efficiently and effectively”
