Revised Car Parking Scheme

Newsdate: 2nd November 2009

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust is altering its approach to car parking charges and will be introducing a time-based scheme on 9th November 2009.

The Trust currently operates a fixed price of £2.00 for up to six hours parking in all of its facilities.  This has raised criticism from patients and visitors who often only use the parking facilities for short visits.  In response to this feedback, the Trust is going to implement time-based charges as follows:

  • Up to 1 hour    £1.00
  • Over 1 and up to 2 hours  £2.00
  • Over 2 and up to 4 hours  £3.00
  • Over 4 hours    £4.00

These changes are expected to benefit the patients and visitors who visit Trust sites for under two hours and as such, will pay less or the same.   We know that parking charges are never popular but the higher range of charges (for over two hours) have been set to help manage demand by discouraging people using Trust sites as a cheaper alternative to off-street parking.  This should ensure that more hospital parking spaces are available for patients and visitors.  The Trust has benchmarked the new parking charges which are comparable with other NHS Trusts and also with charges levied in Wigan Council’s off-street parking facilities.

Concessions remain for those patients and their primary visitors who have to use the car park frequently such as long-term patients or those who require frequent hospital visits for regular treatment for long-term conditions.  The Trust is however going to apply the same revised standard charges for disabled parking.
The Trust encourages the use of public transport when possible by those who are able to use it.  This has a positive impact of the environment through reduction in carbon emissions.   Use of public transport also helps those patients who need to use cars for access as it frees more spaces.

The revised pricing is aiming to be as fair and equitable as possible for all car park users.  Money raised from parking is used to cover the running costs of maintenance, security staff, lighting and security cameras to ensure our car parks are safe for all our patients, staff and visitors.
