Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults

Every Adult has the right to respect, dignity, privacy, equity and a life free from abuse (Joint Committee on Human Rights).

In response to the Department of Health publication  of ‘No Secrets’ in 2000,  the Wigan Adult Safeguarding board was set up.

The Adult Safeguarding board is made up of representatives from all the major agencies in Wigan that accept responsibility for protecting vulnerable adults from abuse. Together with Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, the Wigan Adult Safeguarding board membership comprises of the following agencies:

  • 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Trust
  • Age Concern
  • Ashton, Leigh and Wigan PCT
  • Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Community Healthcare Trust
  • Care Quality Commission
  • Community Safety
  • Domiciliary Care agency
  • Legal Representation
  • Police
  • Wigan and Leigh College
  • Wigan and Leigh Housing
  • Wigan Council, Adult Services Department

The Safeguarding board developed a joint policy and procedures that are specifically aimed at ensuring the joint agency working that is necessary to identify potential abuse to vulnerable adults and protect them from abuse. 

Wrightington Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust is a member of this board, and as such, we accept and endorse the multi – agency policy and procedures and we are committed to the values and principles that underpin them.
