International Day of the Midwife

Newsdate: 6th May 2010

Midwives from Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust joined all other Midwives around the world to celebrate the International Day of the Midwife o¬n May 5th. The Trust welcomed many babies into the world on the 5th May, including Maisy Rennie and Ryan Fisher. Maisy was born at 9.43am, weighing 6lb and 4oz, and is the first baby for mum Kimberley Rennie. Ryan, born at 10.47am, who weighed in at 7lb and 14oz, is the second child for mum Alison Fisher. Both babies were presented with a certificate from the Royal College of Midwives, to celebrate the special day. The aim of the day is to celebrate midwifery and to bring awareness of the importance of midwives’ work.

Diane Swindlehurst, Head of Midwifery, Children’s and Patient Services, said; “The International Day of the Midwife is an occasion when every individual midwife takes time to think about the many others in the profession and to reflect upon  what midwives do for the world.

As part of the celebration each baby born on the day was presented with a certificate by the Midwife caring for their Mother.”
