Trust Board Approves Preferred Service and Site Option

Newsdate: 27th April 2011

The Board of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) have approved the preferred option for their service and site strategy which retains all three main hospital sites – Royal Albert Edward Infirmary (RAEI) in Wigan, Leigh Infirmary and Wrightington Hospital.

The preferred option of retaining all three sites was supported by the Trust Board at their meeting on 27 April 2011. This represents a major ten-year investment across the Trust that intends to deliver:

  • Phase Five at Wigan with a dedicated elective surgery facility, more single room accommodation, replacement of Victorian building stock, more car parking, replacement pathology laboratory and second MRI scanner
  • New outpatients and diagnostic facilities at Leigh to enable it to offer highest availability and improved environment maintaining local access for patients
  • The beginning of a phased programme at Wrightington to increase capacity and improve current facilities

During the process the Trust Board made an explicit decision to retain all three sites.  This was to ensure continued viability of the Trust and to continue to provide patients with local access to our services.

Silas Nicholls, Director of Strategy and Planning, commented, “When we started this process a year ago a number of parties thought that the closure of one or more sites would be the final outcome.  The detailed evaluation we have carried out has clearly identified the retention of all three sites as the most cost effective and best solution for clinical services.”

Andrew Foster, Chief Executive said, “The Trust Board is delighted to announce the outcome of the service and site strategic review.  We believe that the option to invest in all three sites is best for our staff, our patients and visitors.  The planned investment in our sites will allow us to continue to deliver the high quality, safe and caring patient services that our public deserve.”
