Warriors Support Breastfeeding Campaign

Newsdate: 5 Aug 2011

Wigan Warriors players and coaching staff are supporting Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust’s (WWL) campaign to increase the awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding.

WWL and NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust (ALWPCT) both support breastfeeding as the healthiest way to feed your baby.

It gives massive health benefits to both the mother and the baby, and provides everything the baby needs to eat or drink for the first six months.

Breast milk is tailor made for babies and contains all the nutrients they need. It also contains other important factors that are absent from formula milk, these help to protect babies from infection and diseases, and reduces the risk of asthma and obesity. Mum’s can benefit from breast feeding too! It reduces the chances of getting certain diseases, such as ovarian, uterine and breast cancer. And it also protects against developing weaker bones (osteoporosis) in later life. Another added benefit is many new mums find they get their shape back quicker as breast feeding burns up to 500 calories a day.

The benefits of breastfeeding from birth are not only health related.  Costs are reduced as there is no need to buy formula milk and bottles or other sterilizing equipment.

Warriors Head coach Michael Maguire and prop forward Andy Coley, both of whom have celebrated the birth of their children recently, are right behind the campaign.  Maguire said: “Although this is a personal choice for the parents to make, looking at the information and from our own experience I’m confident that choosing to breastfeed is the best approach for new mothers.  The research shows too many benefits to disregard.”

Andrew Foster, Chief Executive of WWL NHS Trust, added:  “We are delighted that the Warriors are supporting us in promoting this worthwhile initiative. This is really good news especially as the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary Maternity Department successfully achieved Stage 2 UNICEF Baby Friendly accreditation this month. This stage of the accreditation was measuring the breastfeeding management skills of staff within the Maternity Department and in fact was described as outstanding by the assessors achieving 100% in all but one of the criteria. I wish to express my thanks and congratulation to all the Midwifery staff in particular members of the Breastfeeding Team who have worked extremely hard and achieved this fantastic result”.

Mums-to-be and new mums can find out more about breastfeeding by speaking to their local midwife. Alternatively they can visit NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan’s new website www.mymummydoes.co.uk. This great website is packed full of information, resources and support. NHS Choices also has a breastfeeding guide on its website www.breastfeeding.nhs.uk.
