Finance Fundraising Delivers Early Festive Gift

Newsdate: 23 December 2011

The Finance Charity Fundraising Committee (FCFC) today presented the first ventilator that has been bought through fundraising donations to Rainbow Ward at Wigan Infirmary. Over £12k has been raised this year, through a number of different activities, which has enabled the first piece of equipment to be purchased. The aim of the FCFC is to raise enough money to purchase two upgraded ventilators at a cost of approximately £25k. Mark Robinson, Clinical Lead for Paediatrics, said “It was great news that the Finance Charity Fundraising Committee chose Paediatrics as their first beneficiary to help us purchase the two new OXYLOG ventilators that will further enhance the high standard of care already delivered in the Paediatrics Emergency Care and on our Rainbow Ward. The machines will provide a stable continuity of care for babies who are very sick, often with critical lung disease and are only just stabilised on a ventilator.”

The FCFC have organised events such as a car boot sale, raffles, staff dress down days and a sponsored cycle through France. The bike ride was one of the main events in 2011, with FCFC members cycling 250km from Orleans to Angers, Wigan’s twinned town.

Rob Forster, Director of Finance and Chair of FCFC, said, “It has been a great year so far, and to raise the money for this first ventilator has made all the hard work very worthwhile. We want to increase the awareness of the FCFC as a Trust fundraising committee, making sure that we follow the mantra ‘keeping patients at the heart of everything we do.’ It gives the department a real opportunity to directly contribute to charitable causes within the Trust, benefitting our patients and our community.”

Future events planned for early 2012 include a Trust site to site hike, a charity auction and a guess the baby competition. The aim is to purchase the second ventilator before the end of the financial year in March.
