Congratulations to Wigan GP Consortia

Newsdate: 8 March 2011

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) is delighted that all five GP Consortia serving patients in the Wigan Borough have achieved ‘pathfinder’ status.

The five Wigan GP Consortia are now part of 177 groups of GP practices nationally who will play an increasing role in commissioning healthcare services as detailed in the Health and Social Care Bill.  This means the Wigan public join 35 million people around the country and will now start to benefit from the major shift of power to trusted local GPs, enabling them to commission the best possible care for their communities.

WWL had already expressed its complete support, to NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan, for the GP Consortia in their application for pathfinder status.  The GP consortia had agreed to develop joint arrangements to commission health services on a Borough-wide basis.

Andrew Foster, Chief Executive at WWL said “I congratulate my GP Consortia colleagues on this achievement which places Wigan as an early adopter of the GP-led commissioning model.  We believe that there is a substantially shared vision for the local NHS to reduce inequalities, improve health and transfer services closer to home.  There has been extensive engagement in recent months between our organisation and individual consortia members and also with them as a group to consider how best to develop patient services across the borough in the future.”
