Staged at the Mercure Piccadilly Hotel in the heart of Manchester, the Advancing Quality Awards 2013 turned out to be a double celebration for WWL as Trust staff also collected the runner up prize in the ‘Most Improved Trust’ category.

“Our well-deserved successes at the Advancing Quality Awards not only underline WWL as a leader in providing quality healthcare, but reflect our productive partnership with the Advancing Quality Alliance to deliver the highest level of treatment and care for the people of Wigan and Leigh,” says WWL Chief Executive Andrew Foster.

WWL is a strategic partner in the Advancing Quality Alliance, a quality improvement initiative across North West hospitals to raise standards of care in common clinical conditions and diseases such as pneumonia, heart failure and hip replacement surgery.

The Advancing Quality Awards recognise NHS trusts who have achieved the highest results. WWL achieved its ‘Best Performing Trust’ award for ensuring 90 per cent of patients received all the relevant Advancing Quality standards, i.e. ‘perfect care’, in the past 12 months.

WWL also finished runner up in the ‘Most Improved Trust’ category which saw the quality of WWL services inspected and rated continuously during the five-year period between 2008 and 2013.

Presenting the award, Liz Kanwar, Advancing Quality Programme Manager, said: “Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh have been high achievers across all the clinical focus areas, implementing many service improvement initiatives to ensure that patients receive excellent care. They have regularly contributed to the many Advancing Quality collaborative events sharing their best practice case studies with hospitals across the North West making this Best Performing Trust award very much well deserved.”

Competition was fierce as WWL beat stiff competition from Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust to win the ‘Best Performing Trust’ award.
