Big-hearted members of BMX enthusiast group RADBMX generously donated £500 of entertainment equipment and presents to Wigan Infirmary’s Rainbow Ward, bringing cheer to child patients spending Christmas in hospital.

Alans BMX on Wallgate in Wigan was the starting point as 20 or so RADBMX members joined owner Alan Woods who drew the winning ticket in a raffle for a gleaming new £500 BMX bike.

After posing for photos with fascinated Christmas shoppers on Wallgate, the BMX riders - many dressed in full Santa costume - set off in a peloton for the journey to Wigan Infirmary, escorted by members of Wigan Scooter Club.

Arriving at Wigan Infirmary the riders met Hospital Play Specialist Nicky Crowther and nurses from Rainbow Ward, who accepted brand new toys, games, a new x-box games console with games, and a flat screen television to be installed on Rainbow Ward.

“Getting together for one final ride of the year, we thought it would be good idea to donate presents to a good cause to help local children,” explained organiser and RADBMX member Lenny Walls. “A number of RADBMX members are from the Wigan area and the North West, so we decided Rainbow Ward at Wigan Infirmary was an obvious choice.”

Elaine Hibbs, Rainbow Ward Manager, commented: "We would like to thank Lenny Walls, Alan Woods at Alans BMX, Carl at in2Signs, Wigan Scooter Club, Hindley Scooter Club and the RADBMX members for these very thoughtful gifts. The children in the ward will really enjoy playing with these new presents and gadgets at Christmas and for many years to come."

Two local businesses contributed to the generous BMX Christmas initiative. Former professional BMX racer and owner of Alans BMX - www.alansbmx.com – Alan Woods donated a shining new BMX bike worth £500 for the raffle.

Carl Barnett owner of in2signs based in Leigh (www.in2-signs.com) offered to accept deliveries of presents of Christmas presents to Rainbow Ward from RADBMX members unable to attend the ride up to Wigan Infirmary.

Wigan Scooter Club donated selection boxes, and Hindley Scooter Club donated a number of toys and games.
