Wigan Athletic Stars bring Christmas Cheer to Children's Ward

Newsdate: 17 December 2013

Wigan Athletic stars, children and staff on Rainbow Ward at Wigan InfirmaryMore than 20 young patients on the Rainbow Ward at Wigan Infirmary will enjoy a happier Christmas this year thanks to the generosity of Wigan Athletic and its players.

‘Latics’ stars Grant Holt, James McArthur, Stephen Crainey and Chris McCann took time out to donate their own presents including teddy bears, footballs, books, games, toys and Wigan Athletic 2014 calendars to the excited youngsters.

The players spent over an hour chatting with children, parents and staff, signing autographs and giving each child a present. As they had some left over, the players asked Rainbow Ward staff to give them to patients staying on the ward on Christmas Day.

Diane Swindlehurst, Head of Nursing for Children’s and Midwifery Services at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust said: “We are delighted that ‘Latics’ players made the effort to come and visit the children during the festive period.

Wigan Athletic’s James McArthur and Grant Holt make one patient’s Christmas on Rainbow Ward “Being in hospital at Christmas can be a particularly difficult time for a child, so we do our best to ensure that we make Christmas Day special.

“Visits like this are a perfect way of putting a smile on the faces of the kids and helping to take their mind off being poorly for a little while. We are so grateful to the players for thinking of the children.”
