WWL Celebrates Excellent A&E

Newsdate: 6 February 2013

WWL celebrates being the top performing Trust in the NHS North for its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department.

Our Executive Management Team thanked staff this week, for their excellent hard work and dedication over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Some staff from A&E thanked by management to celebrate fantastic performance

Their commitment led to WWL's A&E achieving a performance of 97.9% over the period from 1 October 2012 through to 31 December 2012. This made it the top performing Trust in NHS North, which includes the North West, North East, Yorkshire and Humber. This fantastic accomplishment was also reported as the fifth best performing Trust in England.

Andrew Foster, Chief Executive, said “The achievement of the national Accident and Emergency target to see, treat and either admit or discharge 95% of patients in less than four hours is a significant challenge during the winter months. The Accident and Emergency performance in Wigan has been fantastic due to amazing team performances throughout our organisation. This week we have been personally thanking all our staff for this top class performance.”

In the last week of December 2012, 1,761 people attended A&E in Wigan and 99% of them were seen and either admitted or discharged in under four hours. This again was the best performance in the NHS North area and the fourth best in England.

Fiona Noden, Interim Director of Performance added, “We continue to ask local residents to support the NHS Choose Well campaign and think twice about the best place to seek treatment. I am pleased that our appeals are supported by the public. And I would like to thank them for helping us to maintain our top performance scores.”
