Anaesthetic staff at Wrightington Hospital were celebrating this morning when they received two new pieces of equipment kindly donated by the Wrightington Hospital League of Friends.  The two items of state-of-the-art anaesthetic equipment totalled over £30,000.

The first piece of equipment is a Sonasite Nerve S which is an ultra sound machine that helps to visualise some of the nerves located in the body. It is used to perform nerve blocks which help provide pain relief following surgery. In some instances, the operations can also be done with the help of nerve blocks alone without the need for general anaesthesia. It can also be used to do epidural and spinal anaesthetic blocks. The ultrasound machine which cost approximately £25,000 will improve pain relief after operations.

The second piece of equipment donated by the League of Friends is a Glidescope, which is a video assisted scope and it is used in difficult patients where the conventional scoping fails. This equipment is extremely useful to provide general anaesthesia in patients who have difficult airways and cost approximately £5,000.

Dr Koppada, Consultant Anaesthetist says: “I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Barbara Lambert, Chair and all the members of the Wrightington hospital League of Friends of for their generosity in providing two valuable items of equipment to the department of Anaesthetics. The equipment will enable us to provide even better patient care and we are extremely appreciative of their continued support.
