Newsdate: 2 April 2014

Andrew Foster CBE, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust Chief ExecutiveWrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) Chief Executive, Andrew Foster, has been recognised as one of the Top 50 Chief Executives in a list of NHS leaders elected by the country’s largest specialist healthcare magazine, the Health Service Journal (HSJ).
Nominated for his longevity, compassion, leadership and inclusiveness, the HSJ Top 50 Chief Executives Award recognises Andrew Foster’s outstanding leadership qualities and unwavering focus on improving patient care at WWL’s three hospitals and among its 4,500+ staff.

Appointed to the hospital trust’s top role in January 2007, Andrew Foster’s focus has been high quality treatment and patient care with a particular desire to learn from the best hospitals in the world. He led the successful application which resulted in WWL becoming a Foundation Trust in 2008.

Before that Andrew worked for five years as the NHS Director of Human Resources (Workforce Director General) at the Department of Health with principal responsibility for implementing workforce expansion and HR systems modernisation.

Andrew was also the Chairman of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust from 1996 to 2001 and before that Chairman of West Lancashire NHS Trust and non-executive director at Wrightington Hospital NHS Trust.
“It is very pleasing to be named in the top 50 Chief Executives but this recognition is really for the whole Trust and the major achievements we have made in quality, performance, leadership and employee engagement. It is our wonderful staff and leaders who deserve to share the credit,” says Andrew Foster.

The Top 50 Chief Executive judges were keen to look beyond the balance sheet and look at the extent that NHS leaders such as Andrew Foster engage with the people they serve, the staff they employ and the impact their leadership has both within the Trust and beyond.
WWL Chairman Les Higgins added: "This is a magnificent accolade for Andrew Foster personally and Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust in general. We are immensely proud of Andrew's accomplishments, his outstanding leadership qualities and his hugely influential role within the NHS, both locally and nationally.”

HSJ editor Alastair McLellan commented: “It is a tough time to be a chief executive in the NHS. The pressure is high and it is relentless. There is perhaps no better time, then, to celebrate doing an exceptional job. It is a mission which surely at times appears thankless, as does the pressing target to deliver outstanding care at reduced cost.”
