A delighted WWL Finance Team received their North West Finance Team of the Year award amid jubilant celebrations at The Hilton Hotel in Blackpool as the HFMA Awards recognised the contribution of the finance profession to improving healthcare in the United Kingdom.

“To be commended as one of the country’s top performing finance teams is fantastic news for patients and staff,” says WWL Director Finance and Informatics, Rob Forster. “The WWL Finance Team demonstrates the true meaning of ‘team’, working together with hospital services to make a real contribution to high quality patient care.”

“Now more than ever, the NHS faces challenging financial times, so it is important that we recognise the important role sound financial management and innovative thinking plays in maintaining frontline services and improving the patient experience.”

WWL’s financial innovation has not gone unnoticed by Department of Health decision makers in London who now share WWL financial best practice in clinical engagement with other hospitals around England.

WWL Finance creativity isn’t limited to digital with the creating a new financial training course called ‘The NHS Operating Game’ which helps hospital managers generate as much income as possible whilst maintaining a high quality rating.

The NHS Operating Game simulates the running of hospital theatres with colleagues working together in teams to manage referrals and calculate which procedures can take place based on available theatre hours and beds.

The HFMA award is the latest accolade for the WWL Finance Team who last year won a Health Service Journal Financial Efficiency Award for a project called ‘Devolved Financial Management’ which gives hospital managers real-time access to their budgets so every department knows their spending.

“Talking to hospital wards and departments, we found that staff responsible for budgets needed a simpler, faster way to view financial information,” says WWL Associate Director of Finance and Business Intelligence, Claire Liddy. “So we developed an Online App called Devolved Financial Management to provide financial and budget information at the click of a button.”

Some of the youngest and most vulnerable patients at Wigan Infirmary have benefitted from WWL’s Finance Charity Fundraising Committee who raised over £14,000 to fund the design of a Multi-Sensory Room on Rainbow Ward.

WWL Director of Finance and Informatics Rob Forster: “The WWL Finance Team is one of the most innovative, professional and dedicated teams in the NHS, an opinion supported by our continued successes and our passion for improving patient care.”
