Cancer Nurse Completes London Marathon for Hospital Charity

Wigan Infirmary Cancer Care Manager Leo AnsonA cancer nurse working from Wigan has completed the ultimate challenge by running the London marathon and so far raising £2,670 for a patient’s garden to be laid in the £5 million Cancer Care Centre under construction at Wigan Infirmary.

Leonora Anson, ward manager of the cancer care suite at Wigan Infirmary, has gone the extra mile to help patients in her care by running two marathons to raise money the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust’s Three Wishes charity.

Eight months ago, she travelled to Germany to complete her first marathon in Berlin before making her debut in London earlier this month.

Leo, who lives in Standish, is raising money for a patient garden to be built in the grounds of the £5 million Cancer Care Centre now bearing completing at Wigan Infirmary. “I started running in April 2012 to get fit and decided to give myself a goal by completing a challenge that the patient’s I work with can benefit from."

“The hospital’s Three Wishes charity does great work raising money to improve the hospital experience for patients and visitors, and the patient garden in the new Cancer Care Centre will be a place of beauty and calm for patients and their families at a very difficult time in their lives.”
