"The Trust is delighted to receive these awards and we extend our thanks to the ACCEA Committee,” says Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) Chief Executive, Andrew Foster.

“The Clinical Excellence Awards distinguish consultants who contribute most towards the delivery of safe and high quality NHS care. It is testament to the calibre of the Wrightington orthopaedics team that just five orthopaedic surgeons in England received new awards this year….and three of them work at Wrightington Hospital!”

The highly regarded ACCEA awards, which for 2014 recommended only 300 surgeons across the whole country, advises government health ministers on the presentation of national clinical excellence awards to outstanding consultants working in the NHS.

Mr Anthony Clayson, Wrightington Hospital Consultant Orthopaedic SurgeonACCEA award winner Professor Peter Kay said: “It is a great honour to play my part in the Wrightington success story. While this is a personal award, it would not have been possible without the support of the wider trust, the staff, my colleagues and also the patients who have been very supportive, and in particularly very flexible to allow me to be involved in the national aspects of delivering and developing high quality musculoskeletal services across the country.”

Professor Raj Murali said: “I would like to dedicate this award to my patients and junior doctors. I am grateful for the support I have received from my colleagues, both managerial and professional to be nominated for this award. I am humbled by the opportunity to have treated over 27,000 patients and managed around 13,000 operations and it has been a pleasure to have trained over 50 junior doctors who have been a great source of inspiration.”

“To receive this national recognition is a career highlight and a great honour,” said WWL Divisional Medical Director and new ACCEA Bronze Award holder, Mr Tony Clayson. ”We are working extremely hard and I truly believe we are further developing Wrightington with great benefits for patients, staff and the Trust.”
