Dr. Nayyar Naqvi OBE, consultant cardiologist and founder of the Heartbeat appeal, explained that following the decision to purchase a Philips IntelliSpace Critical Care and Anaesthesia (ICCA) system, the hospital has now introduced the system for all beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The new system was made by possible by a contribution of £93,000 from donations to the hospital’s first Heartbeat appeal.

Dr. Naqvi said: ‘We are all delighted with the new Philips system. It means there is less paperwork and more time for patient care in the Coronary Care Unit. Staff can immediately see how the new system saves time.”

Since the system was introduced last month CCU and ICU staff no longer need paper notes because all the patient information they need now appears automatically on a screen at the patient’s bedside.

ICU Senior Sister Petro Bekker said: “The new technology means nurses and doctors have more time to care for patients because they no longer need to spend time filling in forms. My colleagues look up the patient on their personal computer and everything they need to know is there. It's a great innovation!”
Hospital staff this week demonstrated the benefits of the ICCA system to Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust Chairman Les Higgins and Chief Executive Andrew Foster, who described it as ‘very impressive,’ and congratulated the teams on ‘an excellent collaboration.”

The current Heartbeat 2 Appeal, launched by Dr. Naqvi and the Three Wishes hospital charity in 2013, is hoping to raise £250,000 to build a new recovery room within the Coronary Care Unit.
