Cancer Awareness Event

Newsdate: 29 September 2015

The Cancer Services Teams at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS FT are holding an awareness event at Thomas Linacre Centre on Thursday 1 October 2015. The event will run from 10am until 3pm, and is to highlight the importance that earlier detection of cancer means better outcomes.

More than 330,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK each year. People of any age can get cancer, but it’s most common over the age of 50. Diagnosing cancer isn’t always easy – not all cancers show early signs and symptoms and other warning signs appear quite late when the cancer is advanced.

For a number of cancers, increasing awareness of signs and symptoms and the importance of timely treatment has been shown to improve survival from cancer. This is because finding cancer early almost always makes it easier to treat or even cure. In fact, recent figures have found that for eight common cancers - bladder, bowel, breast, cervical, womb, malignant melanoma, ovarian and testicular cancers - survival is three times higher when cancer is diagnosed early. Knowing what changes to look for and when to see your GP could make a real difference.

Our awareness day, which is open to everyone, aims to help individuals know what is normal for their body and to recognise any unusual or persistent changes. Health Professionals from across all WWLs cancer specialist services will be on hand, as well as from our partners at Public Health and Bridgewater, to offer advice and support to anyone seeking it.

Everyone can take steps to reduce their risk of cancer by choosing health options including quitting smoking, keeping physically active and choosing healthy food and drinks. Making sure we take advantage of screening initiatives is also incredibly significant in the fight against cancer. Our breast screening unit will be holding an information stand and explaining the importance of attending regular screening appointments.

A warm welcome will be extended to everyone, with the event being supported by members of the Trust’s Executive Team, Governors and Volunteer Services.

Please come along to support this event and find out more about your local cancer services and what they provide.
