Local Lions Club Helps Local Hospital with Donation

Newsdate: 1 February 2016Lions Club Nebulisers Donation

The Leigh Lions club made a hugely valuable donation of 6 nebulisers to Ince Ward staff, at Wigan Infirmary, on Friday 29 January. Nebulisers are essential equipment for patients suffering from COPD, as they are used to deliver medication that can ease breathlessness.

COPD is a common lung disease that obstructs the airways, making breathing difficult. It is usually caused by either smoking or exposure to fumes and dusty places. Therefore, it can be a preventable condition. However, when COPD develops, it is treatable, although it cannot be cured. The earlier the disease is detected, the more effective the treatment will be.

Compared with other areas in Greater Manchester, Wigan has the highest emergency respiratory rate and highest admission rate for patients with COPD, so this is a key issue for WWL. We cannot thank the Leigh Lions club enough.

Donating the equipment to staff on Ince Ward, Tony Lewis, Leigh Lions chairman said, “Leigh Lions support our community in any way we can. Projects like this are what we are about. If you would like to join our efforts, we encourage you to contact us on 01925 767170 or 07711880420”

In keeping with the local theme, the nebulisers themselves were provided by Evergreen Nebulisers, a company based in Wigan. The Leigh Lions were able to buy the equipment after a fundraising exercise, called “Father Christmas and Sleigh,” at Morrison’s supermarket and TK Max in December raised sufficient money for 6 nebulisers. Evergreen Nebulisers generously agreed to provide an extra one for free.

Nigel Green, from Evergreen Nebulisers, was at the presentation of the equipment and enthused, “As the leading nationwide supplier of nebulisers for over 25 years, we are always happiest when involved with projects in our local community, and it has given us great pleasure in assisting Leigh Lions in their fundraising efforts.”

Asthma Nurse for WWL, Sandra Dermott, was delighted to be able to secure the equipment for Ince Ward. She said, “We are thrilled to receive this very generous donation by the Leigh Lions. Respiratory disease is especially prevalent in our area and we aim to provide the best possible care to local sufferers. This donation will enable us to do this and will allow our excellent service to go from strength to strength.”
