Swinley Ward Staff Honoured with Certificate

Newsdate: 11 February 2016Swinley Ward Presentation

Swinley Ward staff, at Wigan Infirmary, were presented with an award on Monday 1 February to recognise their outstanding care of a patient with a personality disorder.

The Certificate to Reward Positive Practice in Personality Disorder was presented to the team by representatives from the Centre of Expertise in Personality Disorder (CoEPD), part of 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. The CoEPD is a joint venture between the Trust’s Personality Disorder Hub and the award-winning Wigan Multi Agency Strategy, and together they aim to:

  • Provide a central resource for the promotion of research, training, and vocational experience for personality disorder
  • Improve the experience and wellbeing of service users who have a diagnosis of personality disorder
  • Raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding personality disorder

The certificate was developed by the CoEPD as a way for them to give official recognition to examples of outstanding practice in caring for people with a personality disorder, and Swinley Ward staff were the first to receive the accolade.

The CoEPD decided to recognise Swinley Ward after the granddaughter of Sheila Ratcliffe, one of the centre’s carer experts by experience (EBE), had a positive experience on the ward. An EBE is someone who has had experience of living with a personality disorder or caring for someone with a personality disorder. Sheila’s granddaughter, who has been diagnosed with a personality disorder, has been an inpatient on Swinley Ward on numerous occasions, having suffered from complex physical health problems.

Sheila felt that the care her granddaughter received, led by Ward Manager Mel Milloy, was exemplary. Ward staff were able to treat her for her physical problems, all while compassionately taking her mental health problems into account.

Swinley Ward staff gladly accepted the certificate, and the award serves as an example of the outstanding care that we strive to provide, here at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust.

Paula Slevin, Advanced Practitioner in Personality Disorder at 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said, “In my role as Strategy Lead for the Wigan Multi Agency Personality Disorder Strategy, and as a member of the Centre of Expertise, I am very proud to be involved in presenting the inaugural award to Swinley Ward and Wrightington Wigan and Leigh, to give them the recognition they deserve for the excellent work they do.”

In addition, Sheila, who was there on the day to present the certificate, said, “I feel so grateful for the excellent care that the ward staff have given to my granddaughter. It was way above and beyond what you might expect on a ward that cares for people’s physical health problems, given the complexity of her difficulties.”

Pauline Law, Acting Director of Nursing at WWL, said “When treating patients, at any of our sites, we pride ourselves on taking their individual needs into account. Our staff on the Swinley Ward have done a tremendous job in putting this value into practice when dealing with this particular patient. On behalf of WWL, I would like to thank the Centre of Expertise in Personality Disorder for awarding this certificate to us in recognition of the great work done by our staff.”
