Trust Support of Local Food Bank a Success

Newsdate: 3 February 2016Brick

During December, WWL staff supported local food bank, the Brick Project, in their efforts to feed the homeless population of Wigan at Christmas time.

The charity, based on Arcade Street, Wigan, aims to provide support to families and individuals who have direct experience of homelessness, or rough sleeping. To this end, the Brick Project asked people to donate supplies, such as tinned meat, tinned vegetables, tea and coffee, to help out.

The Trust appealed to staff to help this incredibly worthwhile cause by making donations at the Volunteer Help desks on each of our sites, during the week commencing Monday 14 December. Security picked up the donations, from the desks, on a daily basis, so that they could be delivered to the Brick Project.

The aim of this was to raise the spirits of some of the most vulnerable people in our area, part of our social responsibility to the local community. The charitable response from our staff was incredible.

Those involved in the initiative were incredibly pleased with the kind, charitable offerings from WWL staff.

John Gore, WWL Transport Supervisor said: “I was absolutely amazed at how generous our staff have been in donating to this worthy cause.”

Daniel Pollard, Food Bank Co-ordinator for ‘The Brick’ said: I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone at WWL who took the time to support us by donating food stuffs and toiletries.  It’s wonderful to see our local NHS joining forces with us to help the Wigan and Leigh community.  I am very grateful and hope that this is just the beginning and we will be joining forces to help the homeless in our borough in the future.”
