Cancer Care Centre Celebrates Birthday

Newsdate: 26 January 2016

The Cancer Care Centre, at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan, celebrates its first birthday on Friday 29 January at 12pm. To mark the occasion, staff and volunteers at the centre will indulge in some birthday cake, at a small, cosy celebration event.

The unit, which opened in January 2015, was made possible by a partnership between Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, the Christie NHS Foundation Trust and the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. Providing high-quality care, it contains 12 chemotherapy treatment areas, counselling facilities, a complementary therapy suite and a Macmillan Information Support Service.

As well as this, the centre also includes a tranquil, sensory garden, designed to give cancer patients a comfortable retreat whilst in the hospital grounds.

Staff at the centre are thrilled with how the first year of being operational has gone. Leonora Anson, Lead Chemotherapy Nurse, says, “It’s been an exciting first year for the Cancer Care Service here at Wigan. The new unit has allowed the service to expand and develop. More patients are able to attend the unit for treatment, most of who would have had to travel to the Christie in Manchester for chemotherapy, and can now have treatment closer to home.

“The future looks bright for Cancer Services in Wigan and the new unit allows for further service development, which ultimately impacts on a better patient experience.”

Janet Irvine, Macmillan Lead Nurse for Cancer and Palliative Care, adds, “We have been fortunate, in our partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, to be able to offer an Information and Support service which has already benefitted over 3000 people in the Wigan Borough.

“This includes support following diagnosis, benefits advice and signposting to other services, in order to improve the patient and family experience at this difficult time. This service continues to go from strength to strength.”
