WWL’s Business Intelligence Team Shortlisted for National EHI Award

WWL is very pleased to announce that its Business Intelligence Team has been shortlisted for a national EHI (E-Health Insider) Award.

The EHI Awards are considered to be one of the most prestigious events in the Health I.T. calendar, as they aim to honour the achievements of Information Technology professionals in the health sector. This year, the awards will take place at the Lancaster Hotel, London, on Thursday 29 September.

The team have been selected as one of the finalists for the “Excellence in Healthcare Business Analytics” category, beating off fierce competition, with EHI’s website saying that they received a record number of submissions this year. Only three submissions get shortlisted for the final awards night, so it is a brilliant achievement for our Trust.

The Trust has been nominated for the award due for work pioneering in two areas. The first is designing and developing an app to improve the safety and efficiency of our surgical theatres. The second is the design and development of an app that highlights variation in care between consultants.

Both apps convert the Trusts existing data into real-time meaningful and easy to understand intelligence, that enables our clinical services to reflect on and discuss ways to improve their care further.

The apps were designed by our clinicians and then built by the Trusts Business Intelligence team using a piece of software called Qlikview.
Development of the apps was a long process, but a fruitful one, as it involved engaging with a multitude of staff, across 3 different sites.

Despite the fact that the apps use complex analytics and algorithms to process information, the data produced is very easily accessible to our clinical staff. Information is presented in an easy to read, visual format on touchscreens that can be understood and used easily. This is obviously hugely important as our staff can use the information produced to better organise and provide care.

The apps were frequently presented at various Trust committees including Trust Board, Trust Performance Board and Quality and Safety Committee. This demonstrates how commitment to the project was not just evident from our Business Intelligence team, but also at the very top of our Trust.

Despite the apps only being about 12 months old they have already led to further improvements in the Trusts quality and performance. These include:

  • Improved theatre utilisation, which has been fundamental for our transition to our new Orthopaedic facility.
  • Average length of stay for inpatient admissions has been reduced.
  • Patient/relative experience and staff morale has been improved due to a reduction in late starts and finishes of operations.
  • Reduction in our cancellation rate, despite cancellations increasing nationally.

Duncan Armfield, WWLs Deputy Director for Surgery and Joint Services said of the app, “It was essential inefficiencies were highlighted and easily understood to improve theatre effectiveness. Since the apps introduction, patient experience has improved by reducing cancellations and for staff by keeping the day within its planned time schedules reducing overruns. Morale has spiralled up. The app is easy to use, delivering clear information and good data to drive improvement programs. It’s simply brilliant.”
