CQC Inpatient Survey Shows Positive Results for WWL

The results of the 2015 CQC Adult Inpatient Survey are in, and WWL are delighted to announce that we have achieved an improvement, yet again.

The CQC (Care Quality Commission) conducts its Adult Inpatient Survey every year. Its aim is to gain an insight into the patient experience of those who have been admitted to hospital. To do this, the CQC surveyed 83,116 patients across England who were over the age of 16. Excluded from the survey were patients whose treatment related to maternity, or patients admitted for planned termination of pregnancy, day-case patients and private (non-NHS) patients.

During the survey, respondents are asked a series of questions, with a scoring system in place of 0 to 10, 10 being the best possible outcome and 0 being the worst. The questions are split into categories, relating to different areas of hospital care, for example; Waiting List and Planned Admissions or The Hospital and Wards.

From a WWL point of view, 569 patients were surveyed during July 2015. Our results were positive, demonstrating an improvement in patient experience again this year. Last year’s survey had demonstrated an improvement on the previous year as too, demonstrating that as a Trust we are showing continuous improvement in this field.

We scored particularly well in the Waiting List and Planned Admissions category. From responses received, we scored an average of 9.1 out of 10, which places us only 0.4 points short of the highest performing Trust in England. In the A&E/Emergency Care section, we scored 8.8 out of 10. Meanwhile, in the Doctors section we scored 8.7 out of 10 and in Operations and Procedures were scored an impressive 8.6 out of 10.

On individual questions in the survey, findings showed that WWL had performed better in 2015 in 46 questions than we had in 2014. There are 72 questions on the survey, in all.

Whilst the above results were positive news for our Trust, WWL acknowledges that there is always room for improvement. In particular, one area of concern was noise at night disturbing patients whilst they sleep. We are already in the process of remedying this situation with our “Goodnight Always” events that have been established.

WWL Director of Nursing, Pauline Law, is pleased with the results. She said, “At WWL we try very hard to provide our patients with as comfortable and effective an experience as possible. The results of the CQC Adult Inpatient survey are very positive, showing that we have learnt from and improved on our performance last year. However, as a Trust, we always acknowledge that we can improve our services further and this is something we will be continuing to do in the future.
