Wigan Rovers FC Make Generous Donation to WWL Heart and Lungs Fund

Newsdate: 8 November 2016 Wigan Rovers FC Donation

On a very wet and windy Saturday morning on 9 July players, management and officials from  Wigan Rovers FC, set out on an epic bike journey to raise money for the WWL Heart and Lungs Fund. The team of 20 began their journey from Wigan Pier, travelled to Southport and returned home once again all while wearing fancy dress costumes!

The Bike Ride from Wigan Pier to Southport, is an annual Wigan Rovers FC team event with all of the proceeds raised split evenly between funding for the club and a charity of choice voted for by the team. This year the team chose WWL’s Heart and Lungs Fund, formally known as Nr Naqvi’s Heartbeat 2 appeal.

WWL’s Heart and Lung Fund was a unanimous choice made by the club as the cause was one that was close to them all. In January 2016, club Chairman and WWL Porters & Transport Manager, Shaun Dainty suffered a heart attack while skiing in Austria. Thanks to the excellent work of the Cardiology Departments in both Austria and at WWL, Shaun is back in fighting form and has re-joined his teammates.

Despite the weather, the bike ride was a great success as they travelled along the canal, picking up donations along the way. Everyone made it back in one piece and their effort was certainly not wasted, as the team managed to raise £300 for the Heart and Lungs fund. Shaun was on hand to present the cheque to the Coronary Care Unit at WWL.

“It was an honour to be able to present this cheque to Dr Naqvi and his team who helped to get me back to my current condition today. I can’t thank them enough. The Rovers look forward to the Bike Ride every year as it not only helps out a worthy cause but it also brings us together as a team plus we get to have a laugh at our mates in fancy dress!” said Shaun.
