WWL taking part in Hypo Awareness Week campaign

WWL will by taking part in a national drive to raise awareness of a condition in people living with diabetes. We will be staging a seven-day campaign to raise awareness about, and reduce episodes of, hypoglycaemia as part of Hypo Awareness Week, which runs from Monday 3 to Sunday 9, October 2016.

Hypoglycaemia, also known as a hypo, happens when the blood glucose levels of people with diabetes drop too low and they can feel shaky, unwell and can even slip into a coma.

The focus for WWL this year will be the correct management of Hypoglycaemia in patients who are in the hospital. Staff from the Wigan Diabetes Centre will be visiting clinical areas around WWL in order to help staff and patients increase their awareness of the signs of Hypo and provide them with valuable resources regarding the prevention, recognition and the proper way to treat hypoglycaemia.

“During next week we will be visiting as many clinical areas as possible with our ‘Hypo Trolley’ to raise awareness amongst staff and patients about Hypoglycaemia.” said Anne Ollerton, Diabetes Specialist Nurse.

The number of people with diabetes in hospital beds has increased since 2010, up from 14.6 per cent to 16.8 per cent in 2015, according to the latest results from the National Diabetes Inpatient Audit.

The bedside survey also found that more than one fifth (21.8 per cent) of inpatients had one or more hypoglycaemic episodes over the previous seven days of their stay.

The annual campaign aims to raise awareness of hypoglycaemia in the UK by educating healthcare professionals about the condition. The theme for this year is optimum control and the autumn awareness drive is calling for a good control of diabetes to avoid hypos.

Last year, more than 120 hospitals across the country took part.

This programme is organised by Orange Juice communications and has been made possible with funding from Sanofi, with the global life sciences company funding the campaign as part of its commitment to improve healthcare and support people with diabetes.
