Walk a Miracle Mile

Newsdate: 13 September 2016

A mile doesn’t seem a very long distance at all, but if you have suffered from years of discomfort due to joint pain, it can feel like a marathon.

On 24 September the very first Wish Walk will be held to celebrate and support the lives of WWL’s patient’s transformed by surgery, physiotherapy and other medical treatments.

We are asking people to sign up and take part in a sponsored walk on the Wrightington Hospital site. The walk is not a race, but a gentle stroll around the Wrightington site, where participants can walk at their own pace to complete all or just some of the course. This sponsored event will help raise money for the Wrightington Wish Fund, with all monies raised going towards improving our patients’ experiences whilst in hospital.

One such example is the purchase of our Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill. The Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill uses NASA-patented technology, which can reduce a patient’s body weight by as much as 80 percent.

Being able to reduce a patient’s weight, whilst exercising, has many benefits. It allows patients with various conditions and diagnosis to run and walk with much less impact and stress on their joints; helping them to get back on their feet faster.
One patient who uses the equipment commented “Using this treadmill has not only helped me physically but also psychologically. You can do more than you normally could, so you feel like you are making real progress with your recovery”.

If you would like to help transform patients’ lives why not sign up for this very special Wish Walk. It will take place during the Wrightington Open Day - Saturday 24 September from 1pm.

Elizabeth Titley, Fundraising Officer at WWL, said: “It would be wonderful to see patients, families and the public supporting the day and joining in with the Wish Walk. Most of the people signed up to take part in the Wish Walk would not have been able to walk a mile before their surgery, so it will be amazing to see them finish. We would be delighted if you could join us on the day to help raise valuable funds to improve and enhance our patients’ lives.”

Entry for the walk is free but all walkers are encouraged to raise as much money as they can through sponsorship. If you would like to take part in the Wrightington Wish Walk, please contact Elizabeth Titley on 01942 773805 or via e-mail at Elizabeth.titley@wwl.nhs.uk for more information and a sponsorship pack.
