WWL Consultant Surgeon Receives National Distinction

Mr Kumar

Newsdate: 22 February 2017

WWL Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon and Director of Medical Education, Professor Nirmal Kumar has been elected as President-elect of ENT UK serving from March 2017 to 2019 and will succeed Mr Brian Bingham as President from 2019 to 2021.

ENT UK is a professional membership body that represents Ear, Nose and Throat medicine and its related specialities. Over 1,600 medical practitioners, including surgeons, trainees and audiologists are represented by ENT UK.

This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication that Professor Kumar has put into his profession over the years. His experience and commitment can be seen in the number of positions he holds with some very prestigious organisations, for example: In addition to his work at WWL, he leads the North West Clinical Research Network for ENT and he is also an Honorary Professor at Edge Hill University. Nationally, he was Assistant and then Honorary Secretary for ENT UK; examiner in the Diploma in Head and Neck Surgery (DOHNS)/Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) and then the Intercollegiate Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS). He is currently Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators and is Vice Chair and Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration lead on the Specialist Advisory Committee for Otolaryngology advising the General Medical Council on training standards in the specialty.

This is believed to be the first time that a Wigan clinician has been elected as the national lead for a specialty.

On his achievement, Professor Kumar said, “I am really humbled by the fulsome praise which I do not think I fully deserve. However, it is my continuing privilege to represent WWL on the national and international stage both in my specialty of otolaryngology (ENT) and within the generality of surgery. I wish to thank Andrew [Foster, Chief Executive, WWL] and Sanjay [Arya, Consultant Cardiologist and Joint Acting Medical Director, WWL] for their immediate support when I considered standing a few weeks ago.”

Andrew Foster, Chief Executive, WWL was very proud of Professor Kumar’s achievement saying, “This really is an extraordinary achievement which reflects his [Professor Kumar’s] tremendous all-round clinical and personal skills. We perhaps take it for granted that Wrightington has furnished a number of leaders of national orthopaedic bodies but I cannot think of any, present or past, medical figure from Wigan who has achieved such a high distinction. Congratulations Nirmal on your achievement.”
