Businessman Boxes Clever with Donation

13 July

A GENEROUS businessman has brought a breath of fresh air to patients at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust’s (WWL) Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)/Asthma support group.

Shane Sutton, who owns Team Goliath Boxing Gym, on Billinge Road, Pemberton, wanted to support the group because his grandfather William Gaskell, 84, suffers with respiratory problems and his mother Sharon is WWL’s COPD Assistant Practitioner.

Shane’s knockout donation of two nebulisers was made after he used half his £300 prize from winning a boxing match in March.

Father-of-one-Shane, 27, said: “Instead of spending my winnings on going out I decided to give it to charity instead and, as my mum works in the COPD unit, I really wanted to help raise funds for something that would benefit the patients. My grandfather also suffers from respiratory problems so it’s a cause that’s important to us.”

The nebulisers are an invaluable piece of equipment in the treatment of COPD and other respiratory conditions. They help to give high dose of the medications which are necessary to help with breathlessness.

Joanne Wright, COPD Unit Manager, said: “The donation of these machines to our service means that we can continue to treat patients within their own homes, reducing stress and anxiety of a hospital stay and facilitating a speedier recovery. We are very grateful to Shane for thinking of our service when deciding who to support following his boxing match.”

The unit runs a COPD /asthma support group on the last Wednesday of each month, from 3-5pm, at Tesco in Hindley. Patients and their relatives or friends are welcome to drop in to gain advice and support, as well as share experiences and helpful hints on how to manage their condition. Supporters give presentations and discussions on topics ranging from the community police and fire service, to demonstrations on Indian dance and singing.

Nebulisers donated by Shane Sutton (centre) were gratefully received by Oxygen Assessment Sisters Sarah Smith and Claire Magrath, COPD/ Oxygen Lead Specialist Nurse Joanne Wright and COPD Assistant Practitioner Sharon Sutton
