02 October 2017

Visitors to Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust can now check accessibility information about the of the Trust’s departments, wards and services across all hospital sites, thanks to a partnership with DisabledGo.com.

The free to use website will allow visitors, patients and staff to find out about the access to the service they are visiting so they can be confident about attending.

Visitors to the website will be able to find out:

-       where a department is located in relation to the site’s main entrance

-       what appropriate car parking spaces are available

-       if there are lifts to access other floors

-       if a hearing loop is fitted at reception

-       if information is available in alternative formats

-       in-depth information about accessible toilets.

The resource will be a great help to disabled people, their carers, friends and family, and will be of equal help to people who would just like to know more about the areas and facilities at the WWL sites, such as parking, walking distances, main entrances and toilet facilities.

Anna Nelson, Executive Director at DisabledGo.com said: “Accessibility information is vital, not just for disabled people, but carers, older people and those of us who can feel anxious visiting a new place for the first time.

“The Trust’s investment in this comprehensive information will enable people to plan, lower anxiety and help improve everyone’s experience while visiting and the partnership between Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust and DisabledGo strongly links to the Trust’s commitment to put ‘Patients are at the Heart of Everything we do’.

“I hope that the Trust is recognised for its trailblazing role, both in the North West and nationally and we look forward to hearing people’s feedback about the service and the developing app, which will be available in 2018.”

Debbie Jones, Inclusion and Diversity Lead (Services), from Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust said:  “Visiting hospital can often be stressful, and at WWL we are doing all we can to make sure patients feel welcome, safe, and cared for.

“Making these access guides available is a real step forward in this regard, and will enable patients to plan ahead and have a clear understanding of the hospital during their visit.”
