Hospital Cake Sales Raise Dough for Three Wishes

Newsdate: 18 July 2018

Kind-hearted staff from Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust’s Intensive Care Unit, have raised a tasty sum for our Three Wishes Charity - Minds and Memory fund, after holding a cake sale during this years’ dementia week.

For the third year in a row, WWL’s ICU staff baked or donated cakes to raise money for the fund which supports our elderly, stroke and dementia patients.

Having raised over £200 from this year’s sale, the team decided to use the proceeds of the cake sale to purchase 26 dementia dolls.

Dementia dolls can be used as therapy for some patients who have mid-stage dementia, encouraging nurturing instincts, which in turn can help to relax the patient when they are feeling anxious or distressed.

They are also an effective way to keep restless patients focussed on something and can distract them from wanting to “wander”. Additionally, the dolls have proven to lead to increased activity levels and liveliness, along with improvements in communication.

Christine Lewis, ICU/HDU Sister said; “This year we raised over £200 which enabled us to purchase 26 dolls from Smyths Toy Stores of Wigan and Bolton”.

“When the staff at both stores discovered what the dolls were for, they donated money themselves to enable us to purchase more dolls than we would originally have been able to buy”.

“We are currently collecting baby clothing and nappies, so that packs can be given to patients along with the dolls”.

WWL Lead Nurse for Older Persons/Dementia, Jean Ramsdale, was thrilled by the donation.
Jean added; “I would like to thank the ICU team and all those who bought cakes to raise money for the fund.
“Patients living with dementia can feel anxious and distressed when they are in unfamiliar surroundings, such as being in hospital, and studies have shown that by using the dementia dolls, patients can have a better experience while in hospital”.

“When we provide one of our patients with a dementia doll, they are able to take the doll home with them when they are discharge, so we are extremely grateful to have so many dolls donated by the ICU team”.
