Research and Clinical Trials

What are Clinical Trials?

Clinical trials and research are an everyday part of work done in the NHS. The vast majority are carried out by doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals who treat patients all the time. The aims of clinical trials are to find better ways of looking after patients, helping patients recover more quickly and keeping people healthy.

Any patients who participate are voluntary and they are not paid for participating in clinical trials. The benefits to participants are that they can play a more active role in their own health care, gain access to new research treatments before they are widely available, as well as, help others by contributing to medical research.

Research is funded via a number of sources which include the National Institute for Health Research, the Medical Research Council, the Department of Health, Pharmaceutical and other healthcare companies, medical research charities and other Government Departments.

WWL’s Clinical Trials

WWL’s Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) is based at Wrightington Hospital but clinical trials take place across all our hospital sites. Our trials often involve patients with specific health conditions who can potentially benefit from receiving otherwise unavailable treatments. During the clinical trial, the study team usually:

  • Recruit patients with the predetermined characteristics
  • Administer the treatment(s), and
  • Collect data on the patients' health for a defined time period

The CTU manage all WWL’s clinical trials ensuring they are high quality, ethical, operate within the Research Governance Framework and are clinically relevant to our local community. The staff are highly trained in research methodology and Trust procedures. They ensure that research trials conducted at WWL are carried out to international standards by experienced and qualified staff.
