Undergraduate Education Programme

At Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) we value the hard work and skills of our staff and pride ourselves in providing our patients with top care by well-trained surgeons, physicians, specialists and consultants. While we work hard to provide our patients with the best services and staff available, we are also very interested in being involved in helping to support and coach student doctors to become confident and competent professionals.

Our commitment and support of up-and-coming doctors is what makes us the ideal teaching hospital and is one of the main reasons why we are an associate teaching hospital to the University of Manchester. Another reason why we are able to provide a great teaching environment is that we cover a large number of specialties across all of our five sites in the Wigan Borough. These specialties include emergency medicine, acute medicine, cardiology, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, endocrinology and geriatric medicine, acute surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, ear, nose and throat (ENT) and paediatrics; and that’s just at our Wigan Infirmary location. Elsewhere at WWL we also specialise in dermatology, breast screening and cancer treatment, urology, neurology, ophthalmology and orthopaedics where we are a part of the National Orthopaedic Alliance.

In addition to our excellent consultants and tutors we can also provide students with state-of-the-art learning facilities in our Education Centre located on the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary site. There, students are given 24-hour access to our complete medical library, a clinical skills lab, the ability to video stream live surgeries and a lecture theatre all conveniently located next to the Wigan hospital site.
