Working in Wigan: Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust is a major acute trust serving the people of Wigan and Leigh. Innovative and forward thinking, the trust is dedicated to providing the best possible healthcare for the local population in the Wigan Borough and surrounding areas. The Trust aims to continuously provide safe quality care to all patients. Over £220 million is spent each year on a diverse range of reputable general and specialist acute services.

The Trust has three hospital sites, a state-of-the-art outpatient centre, a dedicated Ophthalmology Centre and offices located at Buckingham Row in Wigan town centre.

The Trust is easily accessible from both the M6 and the M61.

Why come to Wigan?

  • Teaching: Interactive teaching programme with excellent feedback. FY1 teaching takes place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday lunchtimes; one of the secessions with one session devoted to case-based presentation and discussions and 2 lecture style.  All trainees are also given the opportunity to attend ILS and an interactive clinical skills day with SimMan training.  Trainees are also expected to attend MDT and clinical meeting and take part in bedside teaching.  Other course provided on site include PLS, ALS, and AIMS.
  • FY2 teaching takes place on Wednesday afternoons
  • Junior Doctors’ Forum: the Medical Director meets with trainees quarterly at the above and all foundation doctors are encouraged to attend.
  • Education Centre: the Education Centre was opening in January 2013 and provides a variety of teaching and seminar rooms, a lecture theatre and a clinical skills and simulation suite.  The Foundation Programme is supported by a full-time administrator, Kathy Twiss.
  • Skills and Simulation Suite: all trainees are given the opportunity to practice existing clinical skills and to learn new skills.  Skills equipment includes SimMan 3G and laparoscopic trainers as well as a wide variety of simulation training models from venepuncture arms and suture kits to central lines 
  • Library: the  library is open 24/7 – visit the Library Service web page
  • Study leave:  this is available to all FY2 doctors and is administered in accordance with deanery guidelines
  • Doctors’ mess: there is an active and well equipped junior doctors mess
