Ankle Replacements and Ankle Replacement Surgery

This page will tell you more about Ankle Replacement and Ankle Replacement Surgery at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust – a renowned Centre of Excellence for Orthopaedic Surgery.

  • Ankle replacements surgery involves replacing a damaged, worn or diseased joint ankle joint with an artificial joint
  • It is an operation that reduces ankle pain most commonly caused by arthritis
  • Prosthetics will be used to replace the damaged bone and cartilage

Why Ankle Replacement Surgery?

Ankle replacement surgery is an effective treatment for an ankle joint that is damaged, worn or diseased. If the ankle joint is not functioning adequately or painlessly, ankle replacement surgery may be the ideal option.

The most common causes of ankle damage are:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Bone Fracture
  • Infection

How is it performed?

Total Ankle Replacement, carried out under general or epidural anaesthetic, will follow this procedure:

  • The damaged part of the lower end of the shin bone will be removed
  • The same will be carried out with the top end of your food bone that the shin bone rests on
  • A piece of metal will be attached to the cut bone ends
  • A medical glue will be used to hold them in place
  • A piece of medical grade plastic will be inserted between the two metal parts
  • The tendons will then be put back into place and the wound stitched up

Your consultant will decide whether Total Ankle Replacement is most suitable option for you based on a number of factors.
