Double award win for WWL

Newsdate: 7 June 2018

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust has scooped a double award win as part of the CHKS Top Hospitals awards programme.

The Trust has been awarded the CHKS national healthcare efficiency award and has also been named as one of the CHKS Top Hospitals for 2018, a prestigious award made on the basis of an analysis of data from all hospital trusts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The healthcare efficiency award recognises organisations that have achieved high standards of operational excellence and outperform their peers on a range of 14 efficiency indicators that support care quality and patient outcomes. Also shortlisted alongside WWL were Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Robert Forster, WWL’s Director of Finance and Deputy Chief Executive, said; “The CHKS award is really unique as it is not an applied for award but assessed independently based on actual data demonstrating the Trusts efficiency.

“Both of the awards are testament to the continued hard work of all staff across the Trust to deliver safe, effective and caring services and shows that we are able to balance high quality outcomes and effective use of scarce resources in such a challenging environment.”

The Top Hospitals awards are data driven and this year, for the first time, the award considers all trusts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The award is made on the basis of an analysis of over 20 indicators including safety, clinical effectiveness, health outcomes, efficiency, patient experience and quality of care.

The Top Hospitals award is one of several awards for all acute trusts that are part of the CHKS Top Hospitals programme which includes national awards for patient safety, quality of care and data quality.

The data for the award comes from information that is regularly submitted by hospitals to NHS Digital to help track performance in a number of areas, including quality of care and patient safety.

Kevin McDonnell, Business Director at Capita Healthcare Decisions, said: “WWL should take pride in having won on the basis of our analysis of healthcare efficiency indicators.

“For the first time we have analysed data from every trust, whether they are a client of CHKS or not, for the Top Hospitals award. The award recognises outstanding performance in those areas which we believe are critical to delivering good patient care. We are delighted that WWL has also been named as one of our Top Hospitals 2018.”

The CHKS Top Hospitals programme awards celebrate the success of healthcare providers across the UK and are awarded to healthcare organisations for their achievements in healthcare quality and improvement.

The ceremony was held in London on the 15th May and was hosted by NHS Confederation chief executive, Niall Dickson with guest speaker Dr Ed Coates.
