Finance Team shortlisted for four national awards

The finance team at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust have been shortlisted for four national awards from the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA).

Amongst the four awards is the prestigious title of “Finance Team of the Year” which asks teams to present the theme of ‘Brighter Together’.

As part of the team’s efforts each member worked on a project with widespread aims covering improvements in patient experience, processes, innovation and sustainability through working together.

This has led to the finance team working with colleagues both inside and outside of the Trust on over 50 projects of varying size.

One of these projects saw Andrew Budory, Head of Financial Management, working with Assistant Director of Nursing, Amanda Cheesman, in a bid to create new avenues to recruit nurses to reduce the number of vacancies on wards and increase patient safety.

Speaking of his project Andrew said: “The opportunity arose to work on a model to create a ‘home grown’ nursing pipeline, helping to create our nurses of the future.

“It’s often difficult to link the work of the finance team to improvements in the patient experience but this was one of those projects with a direct link and I was delighted to be involved.

“But this is just one small part of our Team of the Year application, throughout the year the hard work of the entire team has made opportunities such as applying for this award possible.”

The team have previously received the HFMA accolade back in 2014 and are the current CIPFA Finance Team of the Year for the health sector.

As well as Finance Team of the Year, the team have also been shortlisted for three additional awards:
Costing Award – which focuses on improvements in costing processes that have led to better information to make decisions on improving services. By improving these processes it has enabled better decision making that has generated £1m worth of additional income for the Trust.

Innovation Award – this showcases a project in partnership with the Surgical Division focusing on theatre effectiveness that has led to an improvement in quality and efficiency

Havelock Training Award - which recognises best practice in the training and development of finance staff. During the year the finance team have implemented a continual improvement programme which aims to ensure that all staff have the best possible career opportunities.

Director of Finance and IM&T, Rob Forster, said: “I am so proud of the team for securing such a remarkable achievement. These awards represent consistent hard work and innovation not only by the finance team but the entire Trust. Our staff work hard to maintain financial sustainability and achieve the ultimate goal of maximum funds available to reinvest into patient services and facilities. Fingers cross for December but a fantastic achievement regardless.”
