Being an everyday hero is child’s play at WWL

Newsdate: 18 October 2018

As part of Play in Hospital Week (8th October – 14th October) children on Rainbow Ward at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust’s Wigan Infirmary have been making capes to celebrate the everyday heroes in their lives.

All week-long the children have been putting their creative energy to good use, designing and making the colourful capes.

The theme of the “everyday hero” lets children focus on someone other than a big name hero, whether that be someone from school, from their time at hospital or even a member of their own family.

Play in Hospital Week aims to focus on the role of Play Specialists and the impact that they have on a child’s time in hospital.

Nicola Crowther, Play Specialist on Rainbow Ward said: “Not a lot of people realise that when we’re playing with the children, it’s therapy for them.

“We give them something positive to focus on rather than just the treatment. They play at home so why shouldn’t they play here too.”

And that play makes a massive difference on the children with parents often commenting that they can’t believe the positive effect it’s had.

As well as the cape making competition, the children also took part in Teddy Hospital where their teddy bears were bandaged and given pretend cannulas in a bid to help normalise any treatments the children themselves may have to have.

The week was brought to a close on Friday as Deputy Director of Nursing, Alison Edis, visited the ward and was given the tough task of judging the children’s efforts and picking a winner.

Choosing the top three capes before announcing the winner Alison said: “It is always a pleasure to be asked to take part in activities involving children and patients.

“I was impressed with the creativity and use of colour on all of the capes and choosing the top three was very difficult.

“Children’s heroes take many shapes and forms and it is clear that special powers are not always an essential requirement.

“The children clearly found inspiration from objects dear to their hearts and things that make them happy.”
