WWL Healthcare Heroes Fund Launches

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s charity, Three Wishes, has launched a fund to help staff in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. HealthCare_Heroes

Dedicated NHS staff are on the frontline in the fight against the virus, and there has been overwhelming support from the local community, with many people and local businesses donating goods, money, equipment and other morale-boosters to hardworking staff.

The charity set up the ‘WWL Healthcare Heroes Fund’ for staff welfare following several enquiries from the local community asking how they could help. Donations to this fund will then go on to support our staff and their wellbeing through the pandemic and beyond.

Silas Nicholls, Chief Executive at WWL said: “The response from the community has been incredibly touching. At a time when we all need to come together and do our part, it has been lovely to see so many willing to help.

“Staff working within our hospital sites or out in the community are under pressure as the pandemic continues. So, we felt with all the amazing offers and support, we wanted to create a new fund, as part of our Three Wishes charity, to support staff welfare.”

The Trust would like to reassure staff, patients and members of the public that there are sufficient supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE) at the moment, including face masks, disposable gowns and scrubs to keep our staff safe while they are looking after our patients.

WWL is getting lots of offers of surgical equipment and kit which we are thankful for, but we need to ensure all donations are quality checked and meet appropriate standards. The Trust is unable to accept anything fresh/perishable as there’s no guarantee it will go to a specific area or be used.

Silas added: "This fund is about enhancing the wellbeing of our staff at this difficult time and ensure that support is distributed fairly and collated in one place.

“I’m extremely grateful for the community’s support and the incredibly brave work of our all staff. The key thing to remember as always is when you’re offering support, please stay at home where you can, protect the NHS and save lives.”

Three Wishes is the registered charity of the Trust (1048659).
