Occupational Health and Staff Wellbeing Team

The Occupational Health and Staff Wellbeing Team are based at the Wigan Investment Centre.

The Team is made up of highly trained, skilled staff, committed to improving the efficiency and productivity of organisations by promoting a healthier workforce and environment. The Team includes:

Dr Kumar
Consultant in Occupational Medicine
MB, ChB, MSc, FRCP, FFOM

Dr Kumar qualified from the University of Manchester and trained as a Senior Registrar in the North West Deanery. He is on the Specialist Register as a Consultant in Occupational Medicine.

Dr Kumar was appointed to the post of Consultant at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) in 1997 and leads the Trust’s Occupational Health and Staff Wellbeing Services.

Dr Kumar is a Fellow of both the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and Royal College of Physicians. He is also an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Manchester and Examiner for the Faculty. 

Dr Surinder Kumar

Since his appointment he has developed the Service which provides high quality occupational advice and services to the NHS, and other major local organisations.

Dr Kumar is involved in teaching regional Specialist Trainees in Occupational Medicine.

Angela Brookes
Occupational Health Nurse Manager
RGN, Dip HE Community Health, Occupational Health Nursing

Angela qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1991, completing her training at Wigan School of Nursing.  She worked as a Staff Nurse on the Paediatric Ward at Billinge Hospital before taking up post as a Staff Nurse in Occupational Health in 1994.

She obtained her Occupational Health Diploma at Manchester University in 1998 and has continued to undertake further training in a wide range of Occupational Health subjects since then.

Angela has recently taken up the post of Occupational Health Nurse Manager but maintains her clinical role alongside this new post.

Julie Marciano
Occupational Health Nurse Advisor
RGN, RM, Dip Occupational Health

Julie qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1980, completing her training at Salford Royal Hospitals. She worked as a Staff Nurse on the Medical and Neurological Investigations Ward for two years before travelling and working abroad for two years. In 1985 she qualified as a Registered Midwife completing her training at Billinge Hospital. She continued working as a Midwife gaining experience in the Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit and the community until 2001, when Julie joined the Occupational Health Department.

Julie obtained her Diploma in Professional Studies Occupational Health at St Martin’s College, University of Lancaster, in 2005 and has continued to widen her knowledge and experience in Occupational Health since; she has an interest in promoting Health and Wellbeing.

Christine Williams
Occupational Health Nurse Advisor
RGN, Dip Occupational Health, NEBOSH General Certificate

Christine is a Registered General Nurse with a Diploma in Occupational Health. She began her nurse training at Wigan in 1979. After qualifying in 1983 Christine worked on the general wards within the Hospital, gaining experience in most specialities on both night and day duty. She worked within the Medical Division for 10 years before moving into Occupational Health in 1997. 

Christine provides Occupational Health Services on the RAEI site. Session times are:

Monday:  1.30pm – 4.00pm
Tuesday:  8.30am – 12.00 noon
Wednesday: 1.30pm – 4.30pm

Elizabeth Anna Wotherspoon
Occupational Health Nurse Advisor
BSc (Hons.) Adult Nursing, Staff Nurse Development Level 3 Clinical Skills

Elizabeth completed her nursing degree in 2008. She then worked as a Staff Nurse on the Gynaecology Day Case Unit at Chorley Hospital, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. Her role here included the running and management of the Day Case Unit, care of pre and post operative patients and working within a multidisciplinary role.

Elizabeth now works within the Occupational Health Department at WWL, where she promotes and maintains the health of employees within the workplace through advice and guidance.  Elizabeth also tries to monitor the effect that work may have on the health and wellbeing of the employees.

Cheryl Simpson
Counsellor
University certificate CertHE, University diploma DipHE and Person Centred Counselling qualification

Cheryl trained as a therapist at the University of Salford faculty of Health and Social Care. She ran workshops on various subjects within the dependency field.

Cheryl has been a practicing Staff Counsellor in the Occupational Health Department since 2003. Her experience includes counselling on various subjects including multiple loss, bereavement, fertility-related issues, relationships, work and personal stress, anxiety, panic and depression, post traumatic stress disorder, financial family problems, obsessive compulsive disorder, self esteem, post natal depression, confidence, miscarriage, marriage break up, health anxiety and bullying/harassment.


Cheryl Simpson
In parallel to staff counselling Cheryl has worked for five years for a tier three drug and alcohol treatment service for people with dependency issues. She also has experience as an acupuncture detoxification specialist. 

Cheryl also works as a Specialist Counsellor within the WWL Team of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Assisted Conception. In this role Cheryl focuses on areas such as pre and post fertility treatment counselling, traumatic births, post natal depression, pregnancy anxiety, loss, involuntary childlessness, oncology and neonatal mortality.

Polly Bryant
Office Manager
Higher National Certificate in Medical Administration/ECDL/Medical Terminology/Teeline Shorthand

Polly joined WWL in June 2007 after working as a PA to an Associate Director at Wythenshawe Hospital. Prior to that Polly worked as a training secretary for the Postgraduate Centre in Edinburgh.

Kris Stott
Medical Secretary
ANSPAR Medical Terminology Diploma, ECDL

Kris has worked for the NHS for over 30 years. She joined as a Dark Room Technician in the X-ray Department at Billinge Hospital, before moving to the Breast Screening Unit at RAEI and then to Occupational Health 2001. Kris has a wealth of secretarial qualifications and has kept her skills up to date by attending numerous courses throughout her career.
