Useful Info

Our Family Nurse Partnership is a programme for first time mothers under the age of 20.

We offer intensive and structured home visiting, delivered by our specially trained Family Nurses, from early pregnancy until your child is two.

Family nurses come from a variety of backgrounds including health visiting, midwifery, school nursing and mental health all with an additional BSc (degree) qualification.

The Family Nurse Partnership has three aims: to improve pregnancy outcomes, child health and development and parents’ economic self-sufficiency.

The methods are based on theories of human ecology, self-efficacy and attachment, with much of the work focused on building strong relationships between the client and family nurse to facilitate behaviour change and tackle the emotional problems that prevent some mothers and fathers caring well for their child.

Who can access the service?
First time young mums, under the age of 20 years.

How can people access the service?
Women under the age of 20 and expecting their first baby are invited to join the programme if they are less than 28 weeks pregnant.

Referrals come mainly through Midwifery booking clinics, although referrals are accepted from any source and self referral is welcomed.

Where is the service offered?
Visits are mainly conducted in the expectant mum’s home and take place weekly to fortnightly over a 2 ½ year period until the child reaches the age of 2 years.
