Information Governance Toolkit

The Information Governance Toolkit is a series of requirements, produced jointly by the Department of Health and NHS Connecting for Health.  It is a tool which organisations can assess their compliance with current legislation and national guidance. 

The IG Toolkit encompasses the following initiatives:
Information Governance Management
Confidentiality and Data Protection Assurance
Information Security Assurance
Clinical Information Assurance
Secondary Use Assurance
Corporate Information Assurance

These initiatives each contain a number of requirements.  These requirements are detailed questions asking the Trust if they comply with the criteria being asked.  The Trust has to provide evidence to support this.  The requirements are reviewed by NHS Connecting for Health, the Care Quality Commission, NHS North West (strategic health authority) and Monitor.
