Consultation and Involvement

NHS organisations have long been required by law to consult the public on substantial changes to services and there is now a wider duty to involve and consult patients and the public in:

  • The ongoing planning of services
  • Considering and developing proposals for change
  • Decisions that may affect the operation of services

Wrightington Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust has a dedicated Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) team that supports service managers across the Borough to involve patients and the public in developing services. We have been involving patients, the general public and partner service providers in many different ways for some years now. If you live, work or study in the borough of Wigan and you are interested in getting involved, please contact a member of our PPI team.

When we need the views of the public or patients, for example during a formal consultation process when changes to current services are being proposed, we contact people who we think might be interested in being involved.

When you register to become involved, we will ask you to complete a form that asks what type of involvement suits you, for example getting involved in

  • A member of the hospital patient panel
  • As a lay reader
  • A reference panel member receiving survey questionnaires
  • Or being a lay member on a  discussion group or committee
  • Joining a focus group

You may have an interest in a specific area of care, for example diabetes, because it affects you or a family member or friend. This is useful information which we will register on our database as we sometimes need the views of someone with experience or knowledge of a particular illness or disability and the services provided for that condition.
