Wigan Pride 2022 – A Spotlight on Health Outreach and Inclusion

WWL Health Outreach and Inclusion Service celebrating Wigan Pride 2022

Members of WWL's Health Outreach and Inclusion Service

As we continue our build-up to Wigan Pride 2022 on Saturday 13th August, for which WWL is the headline sponsor, we’re highlighting some of the WWL services set to be in attendance on the day, starting with our Health Outreach and Inclusion Team. The Team will be offering discreet screening for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, Gonorrhoea (all carried out via a finger prick test), basic clinical observations and health advice. The team will also be distributing free condoms and lubricants.

WWL Board of Directors Testing

Members of WWL’s Board of Directors recently took part in testing with the Health Outreach and Inclusion Team.

Everyone is welcome to visit the team’s stall to get free face/beard/ hair glitter and rainbow face paints. There will also be an opportunity to leave an anonymous message on the wishing tree.

Who are the Health Outreach and Inclusion Team?

Team members are Mags, Ellen, Rebecca, Michelle, Sara, Dawn and Alex work to tackle health inequalities within the most vulnerable communities in society. The team’s main function is to support individuals and families, particularly those from disadvantaged groups who often have difficulties accessing services. They work with a wide range of vulnerable people to improve access to a variety of health care services with the aim of reducing hospital admissions.

In addition to support with accessing health services, the team offer general physical assessments, Chlamydia, Syphilis and Gonorrhoea testing (sexually transmitted infection tests) and screening for Blood Borne Virus (BBV) Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV.

The ‘clinic in a box’ mobile clinic assessments also offer checks on blood pressure and blood sugar, pulse oximetry, pregnancy testing, urinalysis and advice on healthy eating, advocacy (acting on a patients behalf), child health advice and signposting/referrals to services. The team take self-referrals or referrals for professionals and work in community settings, patients’ homes, asylum accommodation, massage parlours and on the streets when needed.

If you would like to learn more about the services offered by the team, please feel call 01942 483586 or email wwl.tr-hois@nhs.net
