Surgical Appliances (Orthotics)
The main function of the surgical appliance service is to facilitate the treatment and rehabilitation of the patient.
- About Us
This Surgical Appliances team conducts orthotic assessments to determine the need and the provision of a surgical appliance (orthoses) which, will either remedy or relieve a medical condition or a disability.
An orthosis may also prevent the development of a more disabling condition.
Examples of some of the Orthoses:- Footwear
- Knee Braces
- Compression Stockings
- Abdominal Supports
- Spinal Braces
- Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFO’s)
The service also offers a continuing programme of maintenance and repair once the orthoses have been supplied.
- Accessing the Service
Patients of all age groups can access the service.
People can access the service via a consultant referral or the Musculoskeletal Clinical Assessment and Treatment Service (MSK CATS) Team.
Children may also be referred to the service by the Children’s Therapy Team.The adult service is offered at the three main hospital sites; Wrightington Hospital, Wigan Infirmary and Leigh Infirmary.
A children’s service is offered at Platt Bridge Health Centre and Hope school (for children who attend the school). - Contact Details
