NHS Facilities at Wrightington Hospital
Wrightington Hospital is number one in the North West for Orthopaedic Activity and undertake approximately 1000 procedures per month.
We specialise in joint replacement surgery of both hand and upper limb, and hip and lower limb, and also adult elective orthopaedics. Few Centres have more experience; in 2018 we undertook more than 3000 hip and knee procedures alone.
Our waiting times for treatment are extremely favourable and are progressively being reduced. The waiting list position is regularly reviewed and quarterly updates are routinely sent to Health Authorities and General Practitioners who use the Hospital's services.
Our Rheumatology Service manages rheumatic diseases and there is close co-operation with the Surgical Department. This multi-disciplinary approach is essential in the management of inflammatory arthritis.
We also have an efficient and modern Out Patient Department, a Theatre Suite with three Charnley Howarth Theatres, and a specially equipped plaster room. Adjacent to the theatres is a specialised Recovery Unit where patients are monitored following surgery, and prior to returning to the ward.
A full range of diagnostic and support services is available to ensure that patients receive prompt and efficient attention.

- The Best Care Available
Close co-operation exists between specialities on-site, and we benefit from the invaluable support of highly-skilled Remedial and Rehabilitation Departments. This multi-disciplinary support ensures that our services work in unison to deliver continously positive results for patients.
This also links with our continued commitment to medical research and training, and comprehensive programme of staff development.
All patients are examined by a consultant when they visit for their first appointment, and our consultants are always responsile for leading and managing the teams who look after patients.
We are currently developing a range of initiatives designed to further improve communications with, and support for, patients and their GPs. Great care is taken to ensure that patients are discharged at the correct stage in their recovery, and with the required support to help them to continue their progress. Also, we ensure that the Social Work Department and the Community Liaison Team are fully involved. In effect, preparation for discharge begins on admission - with a thorough multi-disciplinary assessment. An individual 'care plan' is prepared for each patient, taking into account his or her treatment needs and home circumstances.
- Food For Thought
Our Hotel support services are regularly complimented. The varied menu, which offers a wide variety of choice, is especially appreciated. Out-patients and visitors are welcome to use our excellent restaurant facilities. Wrightington serves patients from all over the country and 'open' visiting arrangements apply. Overnight accommodation is available at local hotels if required.
To cater for spiritual needs, our staff are happy, when requested, to help patients arrange visits by religious advisors. Our dedicated voluntary organisations operate a tea bar in the main reception building, a ward library service, a visiting programme, and our hospital radio service 'Radio Wrightington'.
There is an on-going programme of capital investment and refurbishment and this ensures that all our accommodation is in excellent condition. The majority of buildings at Wrightington Hospital are single story - providing easy access for the disabled.
- Building Upon Excellent Foundations
The hospital first gained a National and International reputation as a Centre of Excellence through the work of the late Professor Sir John Charnley, who perfomed the first total hip replacement in 1960 and pioneered the techniques of low friction arthroplasty, including innovative advances to counter post-operative infection. We continue to be at the forefront of research and innovation, cementing our outstanding reputation globally.
